WRITING
Course Description
The IELTS Writing section is designed to assess a candidate's ability to communicate effectively in written English. It lasts for 60 minutes and consists of two tasks, both of which must be completed within the given time. In the Academic IELTS test, Task 1 requires candidates to describe, summarize, or explain visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, maps, or diagrams in at least 150 words. In the General Training test, Task 1 involves writing a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter based on a given situation.
Task 2 is the same for both versions and requires candidates to write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a question, opinion, argument, or problem. Since Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1, candidates are generally advised to spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2. The Writing section is assessed using four equally important criteria:
Task Achievement (or Task Response), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
Examiners evaluate how well candidates answer the question, organize their ideas, use a wide range of vocabulary, and demonstrate accurate grammar and sentence structures. To achieve a high band score, candidates should write clear and well-organized paragraphs, provide relevant examples, use formal academic language, avoid repetition, and carefully check their work for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Regular practice, effective time management, and familiarity with different writing task types are essential for success in the IELTS Writing test.
